Director of Construction - Residential Design-Build
Bald Cypress Builders
Director of Construction - Residential Design-Build
Location: Lexington, South Carolina. Projects are primarily located throughout Lexington, Columbia, and the surrounding Midlands area.
Lead the Build. Develop the Team. Shape What Comes Next.
Bald Cypress Builders is a growing residential design-build remodeling company serving homeowners throughout Lexington and Columbia, SC. From bathrooms and kitchens to major additions and whole-home transformations, our team brings design, planning, budgeting, and construction together under one roof. What separates us isn't only the finished project; it's the experience we create along the way. Our team is built around People First, Leave Things Better, and Raise the Bar, and we believe great construction leadership requires both technical expertise and exceptional communication.
We are seeking a Director of Construction who can help lead Bald Cypress Builders through its next stage of growth while remaining actively involved in project execution. This is a hands-on leadership position. While you will oversee and develop members of our construction team, you will also personally manage projects as we expand capacity. We need someone who can see the big picture without losing sight of what is happening on the jobsite, with the homeowner, or within the schedule.
You will step into a leadership role with direct reports from the beginning and work closely with ownership to improve systems, strengthen accountability, mentor the team, and create a scalable construction operation. The ideal candidate brings a combination of residential construction knowledge, project management discipline, people leadership, and high-level client service. You're just as comfortable solving a complicated construction problem as you are navigating a difficult homeowner conversation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day execution of Bald Cypress Builders' active construction operations.
- Directly supervise and develop members of the construction team.
- Personally manage select residential remodeling and addition projects while providing oversight across other active projects.
- Establish clear expectations around schedules, budgets, quality, communication, and project accountability.
- Coach and mentor Project Managers, Superintendents, Carpenters, and future construction team members.
- Work closely with ownership to increase project capacity and strengthen the company's construction systems.
- Coordinate effectively with trade partners, vendors, designers, and other internal departments.
- Maintain a high level of communication and service with homeowners throughout the construction experience.
- Step into difficult project situations, identify solutions, and keep teams focused on desired outcomes.
- Improve workflows, documentation, processes, and standard operating procedures as the department grows.
- Monitor project performance and help ensure work is delivered according to Bald Cypress Builders' expectations for quality and professionalism.
- Utilize Buildertrend, Google Workspace, and related tools for project tracking and communication.
- Help develop the construction department into a structure that can operate successfully as the company continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated success managing construction projects, teams, schedules, budgets, and competing priorities.
- Residential remodeling, design-build, custom residential, or similar construction experience strongly preferred.
- Proven experience supervising employees and leading a construction or project management team.
- Strong knowledge of construction processes, sequencing, subcontractor coordination, and quality control.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong client-facing communication skills and the ability to de-escalate challenging situations professionally.
- Comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on--you are willing to manage projects, not simply oversee others.
- High level of accountability, initiative, and goal orientation.
- Ability to develop less-experienced team members and raise the performance of the department around you.
- Familiarity with construction management technology; Buildertrend experience is preferred.
- Comfortable working in Google Workspace.
- Licensed builder credentials are a plus, but not required.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites throughout the local market.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Ability to meet company pre-employment screening and driving requirements.
